Two Injured in Late-Night Shooting; Suspect Charged

Two people – one of them a Supreme Court Marshal – were treated for injuries they received in a shooting incident shortly after midnight Tuesday, and the other victim was arrested by the V.I. Police Department and charged as a suspect in the incident.

Shamari Elmes, 22, was placed under arrest and charged with first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, third-degree assault, and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.

According to the police report, at 12:42 a.m. Tuesday the 911 call center received a report that multiple shots were fired in the area of First Stop Gas Station, located across the street from Vitraco Park. That call was followed moments later by a report that two people had been shot and brought to the hospital.

At the Schneider Regional Medical Center police learned that one of the victims was an off-duty Supreme Court marshal who was doing security at the gas station. His name was not released, in accordance with a department policy.

The other person who was shot was the suspect in this matter. Elmes had been shot in the left foot during the exchange of gun fire, police said.

At around noon Tuesday Elmes was placed under arrest. Elmes, who was still being treated for his injury as of Tuesday evening, was scheduled for an advice of rights hearing Wednesday.

Bail was set at $75,000.
