While the eyes of the world were focused on Hurricane Dorian, which since leaving the U.S. Virgin Islands has been building strength as it approaches the U.S. coast, a tropical wave located near the Cabo Verde Islands as of Saturday night is producing widespread cloudiness and showers. According to the National Hurricane Center, the tropical wave could develop into a threat to the Caribbean region by midweek.

Environmental conditions appear conducive for development of this system, and a tropical depression could form next week while the system moves across the Atlantic Ocean. Forecasters at the NHC gave the system about a 60 percent chance of tropical development over the next five days.

“Tropical depression could form during the early or middle part of next week while the system moves northwestward across the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean,” the NHC update said on Saturday night. The chance of tropical development over the next 48 hours is 30 percent, the NHC said.
