The D. H. Jackson Long-Term Disaster Recovery Committee Inc. (DHJ) held its Fourth Annual Scholarship Banquet, a sold-out event on Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Holy Family Catholic Church Banquet Hall. The committee honored Anya Stuart, executive director of the Family Resource Center for her 21 years of service and commitment as an advocate for victims of violent crimes in the Virgin Islands.

In addition, she is also committed to the advocacy for children and families. Chairman Randolph N. Bennett and Chairwoman Bernadette V.M. Melendez presented Stuart with a plaque in recognition of her exemplary community service.

The committee provides four scholarships annually to graduating high school seniors from the four public high schools in the territory. These students must attend the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). During the ceremony, the committee presented certificates of scholarship to the essay applicant winners. Ja’Mouri George, 2021 graduate of Charlotte Amalie High School (CAHS) and Mitchell Turnbull Jr., 2021 graduate of Ivanna Eudora Kean School (IEKHS) both received a $1,000 tuition only scholarship. Oscania Lopez Almonte, 2021 graduate of St. Croix Central High School (SCCHS), received a $500 book scholarship.

Other essay applicants are Jaresia Elliot-Hendrickson, 2021 graduate of Charlotte Amalie High School (CAHS), and Adajah George, 2021 graduate of Ivanna Eudora Kean High School (IEKHS), who both received a monetary gift from the committee’s 2019 honoree Dr. Rita Howard.
