Michelle Smith Is No. 2 in the USA 600m; Sofia Swindell Breaks Own VI U20 Record

Virgin Islands Sports Ambassador Michelle Smith, a high school senior at Montverde Academy, competed in the Millrose Games on Feb. 11, in New York, N.Y.

Smith ran the second fastest high school time in the USA in the 600m with a time of 1:30.96.

She also set a meet record and school record with her Montverde teammates while finishing first in the 4 * 200m relay. Their time of 1:34.78 was 0.03 of a second off the national high school record, which is 1:34.75. The Montverde 4*200m girls’ team is currently ranked number 1 in the USA. Smith ran a split of 23.71 for the 200m on the final leg of the relay.

Smith will compete next in her first outdoor meet, the Louie Bing Classic, on Feb. 15 and 16.

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Sofia Swindell, a junior at The Lawrenceville School, competed in the Varsity Classic meet on Feb. 5 at The Armory in New York City.

Swindell finished first in the 55m hurdles, running a personal best of 8.23 and setting both a V.I. National U20 record and a Lawrenceville School record.  She also placed first in the 200m, achieving another personal best and school record, with a time of 24.57.   In the triple jump, Swindell placed first with a distance of 36’5.5” (11.11 meters).

Swindell also competed in the MAPL Invitational on Feb. 10, at Mercersburg Academy, in Penn. She placed first in the prelims of the 60m with a time of 7.41 advancing to the final where she finished in first place with a time of 7.25. She won the 55m hurdles in a time of 8.32, and she finished first in the triple jump with a jump of 36’ 6” (11.12 meters).

Swindell will compete next in the Garden State Invitational Indoor Meet in Staten Island, N.Y., on Feb. 16.

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Malique Smith, competed in the Florida University Last Chance Indoor Meet on Feb. 9, in Gainesville, Fla.

He finished first in his heat of the 400m with a season-best time of 48.90.

Smith will compete next in the USC Open Indoor Meet on Feb. 17 in Columbia, S.C.

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Rachel Conhoff, a graduate student at Indiana State University, competed unattached at the Marian Indoor Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind., on Feb. 9.

Conhoff competed in the mile, finishing first in a time of 5:04.81.

She will compete next in the ISU Open in Terre Haute, Ind., on Feb. 17.

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Michael Dizon-Bumann, a sophomore at Cornell University and graduate of Good Hope Country Day, opened up his indoor track and field season at the Ithaca College Tri-Meet in Ithaca, N.Y., on Feb. 10.

He finished first in the 800m with a time of 1:58.81.

Dizon-Bumann will compete next in the Deneault Invitational on Feb. 17 in Ithaca, N.Y.

Williams, a junior at the University of New Mexico, competed at the Don Kirby Invitational on Feb. 9 and 10 in Albuquerque, N.M. He finished 2nd in the 800m in a time of 1:52.36.

Williams will compete next in the Terrier DMR Challenge on Feb. 16 in Boston, Mass.

The elementary school athletes on St. Croix competed in the 3rd SCIAA Track and Field Meet on Friday, Feb. 9, at the St. Croix Educational Complex Track facility. Because of the weather system that passed through the territory on Wednesday and Thursday, the Middle School, Junior Varsity, and Varsity Track and Field were postponed to Tuesday, Feb. 13
