Man Wanted for Attempted Murder Surrenders to Police on St. Croix

A St. Croix man wanted in connection with a 2025 shooting near the Frederiksted Fish Market is now in police custody, the Virgin Islands Police Department reported.

Donnie Heywood turned himself in Thursday at the Wilbur Francis Command Police Station, where he was arrested on an outstanding warrant, according to a VIPD police report.

The charges include attempted murder, possession of ammunition, carrying a firearm during a crime of violence, aiming or discharging, reckless endangerment first, assault first, and assault third. Bail was set at $100,000, and Heywood was transported to the John Bell Correctional Facility pending his advice of rights hearing, the police report stated.

According to the VIPD, the case stems from a March 2, 2025, incident when the 911 Emergency Call Center received reports of multiple shots fired near the Frederiksted Fish Market around 3:15 p.m. Officers responding to the scene located two gunshot victims, while a third victim later arrived at the hospital by private vehicle. Investigators also recovered multiple spent cartridge casings from the roadway.

A detective with the Criminal Investigation Bureau identified Heywood as a suspect during the investigation, police said.
