Aug. 5, 2005 – V.I. police say, as of Friday, they had nothing connecting the latest death of a homeless person to murders earlier this year of homeless individuals.
On Tuesday, 53-year-old Lloyd Noorhassan was found dead at an abandoned car wash in the vicinity of Sunny Isle plaza. Police originally thought the man had died of natural causes.
However, according to a press release from the department, "An autopsy performed on Thursday, Aug. 4, revealed that the man died of blunt trauma to the body — he suffered internal injuries. The case is being investigated as a homicide."
Herminio Velazquez, deputy police chief, said Friday, "We have nothing that indicates this incident is connected to the previous incidents."
The previous incidents include Lucien Felix, 60, who was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head early Jan. 27 under the balcony at 5 and 6 King Street in Frederiksted; and Sandra Marshall, 58, whose body was found in the bushes off a road, three-quarters of a mile north of Eulalie Rivera Elementary School in Grove Place.
In February, Clifton Lewis, 38, who makes his living cajoling coins from motorists stopped at the light on Centerline Road at Paradise, was shot but not critically wounded. (See "Homeless On St. Croix Under Attack").
Velazquez said no arrests had been made in those incidents.
In the Aug. 2 incident a concerned citizen made a call to the police department at 6:36 p.m. regarding Noorhassan. When police arrived, emergency medical technicians there said the man had no vital signs.
Velazquez said the V.I. Police Department is appealing to the public to call 778-2211, ext. 6031 with information that may assist in the investigation of this case.
He added that, at this point, all possibilities are being considered.
