Feb. 2, 2004 — In the coming weeks, female students in the territory will be receiving valuable information about teen pregnancy and prevention, HIV/AIDS, feminine hygiene and other topics. Johnson & Johnson, the health and beauty products company, will be conducting two-hour educational seminars at schools throughout St. Thomas and St. Croix.
Conducting each of the 18 V.I. seminars, from Feb. 2-12, will be Denise James-Patron, the former vice-president of the nursing association of the Trinidad and Tobago public service association. A licensed midwife, James-Patron began her nursing career in 1984 at Port of Spain General Hospital.
Said James Patron, "During my experience as a midwife, I nursed many teenage girls from age 12 upwards who were pregnant
There I became more aware of the many problems plaguing teenage girls."
In 2000 James-Patron joined Johnson & Johnson to help conduct educational seminars. "I now had the opportunity of reaching and educating girls from 9 years onward on issues such as feminine hygiene, becoming a woman, bodily changes
and other important areas," she said.
In her post at Johnson & Johnson, James-Patron equips girls for early life by providing a forum for them to interact. At each seminar, female students receive a "beginner's kit" containing feminine hygiene products and related product information.
