VIHC OFFERS GRANT WRITING WORKSHOPS

In order to assist potential grant applicants in preparing grant proposals for its next major grant deadline Nov. 1, the Virgin Islands Humanities Council has scheduled grant-writing workshops beginning Sept. 26 on St. Croix and Sept 29 on St. Thomas.
Rosa Thomas Mannix, newly arrived Humanities Council program officer, said Thursday the workshops are free, but are intended only for applicants interested in seeking VIHC funding for grant projects that reflect humanities themes.
That is a very broad area, however. Mannix said the Council grants go to projects that are educational in nature, but include history, arts, culture, jurisprudence, "All those things that make us human," Mannix said.
The Humanities Council sponsored the Thurgood Marshall "March to Justice" exhibit that was on display from March to May 2002 at the Grand Galleria on St. Thomas.
Mannix emphasized that the scope of eligibility for grants was very broad.
The Humanities Council awards two types of grants. Mini grants of up to $3,500 are awarded six times a year, every other month in the odd months. Grants of up to $10,000 are offered twice a year in November and July.
Mannix said the Council awards about 12 grants a year, "But we want to increase that number."
She said money is available to offer more grants.
The St. Croix workshop will be held 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at the Florence Williams Library.
The St. Thomas workshop starts at 3:30 until 5 p.m. at the V.I. Cultural Heritage Institute.
Opportunities for counseling on specific grant applications will also be available on those days by appointment, according to a release from the Council. For more information or to schedule an appointment call 776-4044. Or check the Web site at
