Aug. 11, 2003 – Gov. Charles W. Turnbull has submitted proposed legislation to the Senate that would transfer the operations of two health centers to not-for-profit corporations.
Operations of the East End Family Clinic on St. Thomas would be transferred to the St. Thomas East End Medical Center Corp.
Those of the Frederiksted Health Center/Ingeborg Nesbitt Clinic would be transferred to Frederiksted Health Care Inc.
The two not-for-profit entities have received federal community health center funding from the Health Resources Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Local government entities would not be eligible for such funding.
According to a Government House release distributed on Monday, the not-for-profits "will be responsible for the daily operational aspects of the clinics, but not the physical facilities."
Turnbull said in his transmittal letter to Senate President David Jones that administration officials and members of the Health Centers Transition Task Force stand ready to provide testimony on the bill's provisions.
