Brief: Governor Holds Secret Meeting

Nov. 20, 2006 — Public officials are not talking about a closed-door meeting that took place Monday at the Public Finance Authority building on St. Thomas.
However, it is known that Gov. Charles W. Turnbull called his financial advisors and members of the government's financial team together to attend the meeting, described by St. Thomas Administrator James O'Bryan as an "informal get-together."
By law, all formal PFA meetings are required to be open to the public.
When contacted Monday evening, those in attendance said they preferred not to disclose what took place during the meeting. However, Office of Management and Budget Director Ira Mills said that talks centered on an "ongoing issue."
Since sources say that Turnbull called PFA Director Kent Bernier Sr. back from a meeting he was attending in Hawaii to discuss Jeffery Prosser's proposal to sell some of his V.I. holdings to the local government, it is assumed that was the topic of the meeting (See "Prosser Seeking V.I. Government Bailout.")
Bernier, who was scheduled to be back in the territory on Sunday and back in his office Monday, could not be reached for comment Monday evening.
