VITEMA Offers Disaster Training

July 18, 2006 –The V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency will host annual CERT training, which provides residents with the basic skills required to take care of themselves and others during a disaster.
The training is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 22 and 23 at the University of the Virgin Islands Fitness and Sports Complex.
Residents who are CERT trained and would like a refresher course are welcome to attend in addition to those interested in becoming CERT members.

Gittens, VITEMA's State Training and Exercise Officer/Citizens Corps Program manager, said the CERT program started after President Bush's 2002 State of the Union address, when he called for all Americans to volunteer and support their local communities.
CERT membesr take care of themselves and their family when disaster strikes, and they also assist in recovery and response efforts after the event.
