CENTER STAFF RECALLS GWENDOLEN ADAMS' SUPPORT

0
Dear Source,

The staff of the Adams Music Research Institute and the Center for Black Music Research, Columbia College Chicago, was saddened to learn of the passing of Gwendolen Adams. On behalf of myself, Dr. Rosita M. Sands, CBMR director, and Dr. Samuel A. Floyd Jr., director emeritus, let me express our deepest sympathies to Alton A. Adams Jr. and the entire Adams family on their loss.
I first met Ms. Adams a couple of years ago when we gathered, along with other family members, to discuss plans for the new branch of the CBMR, the Alton Augustus Adams Music Research Institute (AMRI) which was being established on St. Thomas and named in honor of her father, Mr. Alton Augustus Adams Sr. Ms. Adams was named a member of the AMRI Advisory Committee and became a loyal supporter, faithfully attending most of the public programs presented by the Institute in St. Thomas since AMRI's founding.
Over the past two years, we personally exchanged e-mails and spoke on the phone, via long-distance calls and each time that I was on the island. She was a warm and encouraging individual and it was my honor to have the opportunity to know her.
We express our deepest condolences to the entire Adams Family.
Dr. Rosita M. Sands
Director,
Center for Black Music Research
Columbia College Chicago
Chicago, Ill.
