POLICE ID SECOND CAR ACCIDENT VICTIM

April 19, 2001 – St. Croix police Wednesday identified the second man killed in a vehicular accident early Tuesday morning on the Queen Mary Highway. Deputy Chief Novelle Francis confirmed that 23-year-old Haniel Williams of Estate Nadir was in the passenger seat of the vehicle when the rental car slammed into a mahogany tree near the Whim Great House around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
He said evidence from the investigation is consistent with the supposition that the driver, Keith Nicholson, also of St. Thomas, fell asleep at the wheel.
Francis also confirmed that an autopsy was conducted Wednesday on one of the victims; the findings have not been released. However, TV 2 News reported Tuesday night that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
Police authorities at the scene described the accident as the worst in recent history. St. Croix Rescue officers had to use special hydraulic cutting tools to free the bodies from the remains of the wrecked Mitsubishi Mirage.
Both men were reportedly on St. Croix attending an Easter weekend reggae concert.
