POLICE CAN’T PIN MURDER CHARGES ON SUSPECT

May 15, 2001 — A suspect arrested by police on Saturday in connection with the ambush-style murder of a St. Croix man last week will not be charged with the crime.
Police raided the Mon Bijou residence of Anthony Marrero, 29, and arrested him on charges of contempt of court. He was the main suspect in the murder of Dion Benjamin, 33, whose body was found by police last Wednesday in his Mazda mini-van in the Watergut area. Benjamin had been shot from close range at least three times.
St. Croix Deputy Police Chief Novelle Francis said there was not enough evidence to hold Marrero for the murder. "We weren’t able to charge this individual with this homicide at this time," he said.
Benjamin’s death was the third killing on St. Croix this year and the ninth in the territory. Francis urged anyone with information to call the Criminal Investigations Bureau at 778-2211, ext. 4531, or emergency number 911.
