UNITED WAY ELECTS OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS FOR 2003

April 6, 2002 – Incoming president S. L. Caesar, taking over the United Way of St. Thomas-St. John post from Scott Barber, pledged to use his previous experience as a past president to encourage volunteers and agencies to share the message about how the United Way serves the V. I. Community.
Caesar, manager of Innovative Business Solutions, was elected at the annual meeting of the United Way of St. Thomas-St. John held March 27.
The other officers elected for this year include vice president/president-elect Cornel Williams, special assistant to the vice president of Administration and Finance of the University of the Virgin Islands; secretary Andrea Martin, former general manager, Innovative Cable TV St. Thomas-St. John; and treasurer Rosalie Javois, president of BXI Caribbean.
Elected to serve three years as members of the United Way's board of directors were: Caesar; Angelika Balkarran, executive accountant, Atlantic Tele-Network; Rosalie Ballentine, local attorney; Joanne Barry, director of the V.I. Division of Personnel; Julita de Leon, legal counsel, V.I. Coastal Zone Management Program; Shirley Quetel Hendricks, Medicare services technician, Lt. Governor's Office; Edric Jones, operations manager, A. H. Riise; Steve Jones, Caribbean manager, Pharmed Group; and Margaret Sprauve, M.D. These persons replace those on the 25-member board whose terms are expiring.
Outgoing president Scott Barber, president of Universal Business Supplies and of Barber Enterprises, said the past year was "the best year for United Way thanks to thoughtful and committed people who made the decision to get the job done."
He listed accomplishments during his tenure, including expanding United Way membership to the Carabana Ensemble Theater, a St. John-based organization that provides theatre and literacy programs for the youth in Coral Bay; the launching of United Way's new web site that can be found at www.unitedway.vi; and the setting of the organization's highest campaign goal in its history.
The 17 St. Thomas and St. John human service agencies that fall under the United Way umbrella are: American Red Cross, Carabana Ensemble Theater Company, Catholic Charities of the Virgin Islands, Civil Air Patrol, Downstreet People's Youth in Action, Dial-A-Ride St. John, Dial-A-Ride St. Thomas, Ebenezer Gardens, Fair Haven Camp, Friends of Volunteers in Public Schools, Girl Scout Council, Legal Services of the Virgin Islands, Lutheran Reformation Summer Program, St. Thomas Reformed Church Summer Program, Shaky Acres, Victim Advocate Program and V.I. Council, Boy Scouts of America.
