July 9, 2002 – "For Better For Worse" is proving to be one of the longest-running plays in V.I. history. After an initial run of 15 performances starting June 7, it was extended for three more last weekend. Now, it's been extended again, with shows this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
That will make a total of 21 — tough to top unless you count weekly season-long visitor attractions such as those at the Cinnamon Bay amphitheater on St. John.
The play, written by Reichhold Center for the Arts director David Edgecombe during his university days in the 1970s, is a comedy that focuses on a rebellious young couple and their closed-minded parents. Although it's a production of the Reichhold's Caribbean Repertory Theater Company, the venue is the Little Theater on the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus.
Edgecombe, who directed the production, says "For Better For Worse" pokes fun at middle-class hypocrises in a Caribbean society as a Sandra (Jolanda Donadelle) and Derek (George Silcott Jr.), rebel against traditional notions of marriage and raising a family — and find themselves in a battle royal with Sandra's religiously obsessed mother (Josephine Lindquist) and Derek's politically possessed father (Seymour Davis). Also in the cast are Donna Renee Carter, Michael Kuich and Jahima Parsons.
"The community has been warm and extremely receptive to the play," Edgecombe said a week ago. "The extended run is in response to the favorable feedback we continue to receive."
