GOVERNOR NOTES PASSING OF 'SMITHY' SMITH

Dec. 9, 2002 – Gov. Charles W. Turnbull extended condolences Monday to the family, friends and loved ones of retired Government House executive chauffeur Ishmael "Smithy" Smith, who died Dec. 1, 2002, at his home. Smith served as chauffeur to former Gov. Cyril E. King and Gov. Alexander A. Farrelly, as well as to former lieutenant governors.
Turnbull noted that Smith retired from service of great distinction and devotion in December 1994, at the conclusion of the Farrelly administration.
"His personnel record indicates he was highly regarded for his sound judgment, discretion and the confidential handling of the duties associated with being a key member of the inner circle of governors and lieutenant governors throughout his employment in such sensitive posts," Turnbull said.
The governor conveyed "profound condolences to Mrs. Jeanette Smith and the family, friends and loved ones of Ishmael Smith."
"May God grant comfort to all mourning the loss of this dedicated and devoted public servant," Turnbull said.
Funeral arrangements for Smith are pending.
