MANDELA CIRCLE TRAFFIC LIGHTS WORKING AGAIN

July 17, 2003 – Motorists traveling through Mandela Circle this week who may have gotten used to the traffic lights being on "blink" mode will once again find definitive red, green or amber lights on all approaches to the heavily trafficked intersection.
A release from the Public Works department via Government House Thursday night said thanks to a collaborative effort between the St. Thomas and St. Croix Highway Engineering Divisions repairs to a module for the traffic signals had been completed ahead of schedule and the lights that "were placed in blink mode while the repairs were pending .. are no fully operational."
Motorists in the Virgin Islands are used to being cautious and courteous due to the many blind curves and access roads where it is impossible to see oncoming cars and where there are no traffic lights. And it was no different this week at Mandela Circle. Drivers took turns waiting to enter and cross the intersection and traffic moved, for the most part, unimpeded by the malfunctioning lights. Robert L. Moorehead, acting commissioner of Public Works, said "The motorists are to be commended for their courtesy during this time."
