Aug. 14, 2003 – The Port Authority has put out an advisory to boaters to use "extreme caution" in navigating the Crown Bay cruise ship port area, with construction eastward of the main pier under way.
The maximum speed allowed within the territory's harbor areas is 6 knots, a VIPA release issued on Thursday noted. Boaters should keep wakes minimal, it said, and transit in and around the construction area and between the dock and the breasting dolphin adjacent to the existing dock "is prohibited to all marine traffic."
The Port Authority has embarked on a project to expand the dock so that it can accommodate two mega-cruise ships, one on either side, and at the same time to develop a commercial complex on the adjacent land.
Although the target date for the work to be finished was given as June 2004 at the formal groundbreaking ceremony two months ago, the release stated: "Construction is expected to be completed prior to the 2005 cruise ship season."
