Dec. 4, 2003 — In honor of the late Mario Watlington, who served the University of the Virgin Islands for more than 20 years as its registrar, director of admissions, a member of the faculty, and as a board member of the UVI board of trustees and of the UVI Foundation, the University has established the 2004 Mario Watlington Scholarship.
"Because Mario Watlington was such an integral part of the history of the University of the Virgin Islands, and was a much loved member of the UVI family, it is appropriate that we pay homage to him by awarding a scholarship in his name to a Virgin Islander attending UVI in the fall of 2004," UVI President LaVerne E. Ragster said in a release.
Watlington died Nov. 27 at the age of 86. A graduate of Charlotte Amalie High School Class of 1937, he is remembered as an educator, educational administrator, dedicated servant of All Saints Cathedral, political activist, and avid tennis player and advocate. His affiliation with UVI began as the institution began life in 1963 as the College of the Virgin Islands.
Donations to the scholarship may be sent to the UVI Institutional Advancement Office, No. 2 John Brewer's Bay, St. Thomas, V.I. 00802. Checks may be made payable to the University of the Virgin Islands, indicating "2004 Mario Watlington Scholarship" in the memo section of the check.
