Dec. 5, 2003 – Local not-for-profit organizations whose focuses are on the well-being of the territory's children and its animals will be the beneficiaries of a fund-raiser "open house" Tuesday evening at Craig and Sally's Restaurant in Frenchtown.
"A Crate Idea" is the theme of the event being hosted by Craig and Sally Darash to raise funds for the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands and the Humane Society of St. Thomas.
The event is taking place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on the day that the Community Foundation will be releasing the findings of its 2003 V.I. Kids Count research into the socioeconomic status of the territory's youngsters.
This year's Kids Count report is titled "Our Children Now! Getting Off to a Good Start." At the morning community forum where it will be presented, CFVI will introduce a model early child-care program and family center designed to provide at-risk young children with an enriching educational environment and empower families with young children to achieve self-sufficiency. The organization also will announce 11 recipients of its 2nd annual Silverbells and Cockleshells Awards for community outreach to young people.
The Humane Society is in the midst of a major fund-raising campaign to support the construction of a state-of-the-art new "animal care campus" off Weymouth-Rhymer Highway to replace its shelter facility and offices in Estate Nadir.
Admission to "A Crate Idea" is $40 per person. Wines and snacks will be served, and each patron will receive a wooden wine crate to take home.
