Dec. 29, 2003 – Monday's Festival focus was on young people, with a Children's Fun Day in the afternoon and a Youth Extravaganza at night.
At least 200 children received balloons, hot dogs, bags of candy and toys in the afternoon festivities. In the evening, young people took to the stage to showcase their talents in singing, dancing and modeling.
"Christmas is a time for the children to have fun, and today was strictly for the children," Antoinette Lenhart, Crucian Christmas Festival Committee liaison for the Children's Fun Day, said.
The children's festivities, which took place in "Bradyville," the Festival Village in Frederiksted, went from 2 until about 6 p.m. Scores of children participated in bag, foot and egg races, and musical chairs. The event was sponsored by Merchant's Market and Island Dairies. The festival organization donated the bags of candy and more than 200 toys for the children.
Around 8 p.m. the Youth Extravaganza got going. Jennella John, reigning Education Complex queen, was the mistress of ceremonies.
In a fun-filled show that lasted about two hours, Rachanna Johnson, a petite 6 year old, impressed the crowd with her rendition of the popular reggae tune "Baby Boy" by Sean Paul. A group of 5th graders from Evelyn M. Williams School performed an interpretive dance to the music of "O, Holy Night." A reggae dance group, The Stylistic Warriors, also performed, and later all of the participants modeled pre-teen fashions.
