Parents Are Illegal, But Baby Is a Citizen

Aug. 16, 2004 – It is an old story. Fourteen males and four females, all undocumented aliens, arrived on St. John over the weekend. They were rounded up by police on Sunday to be sent back to Haiti. The twist is that, instead of 18, there are now 19.
According to Sgt. Thomas Hannah, Police Department spokesman, one of the women gave birth while hiding in some bushes. The baby and mother were taken to Roy L. Schneider Hospital on St. Thomas, where both were pronounced healthy.
Hannah said the baby will be going back to Haiti with its parents. However, since the child was born on U.S. soil, it is an American citizen and will always have the option of returning to the United States legally.
