UVI's Little Theatre Schedules Auditions for Spring Production of '1984'
The Little Theatre at the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus has scheduled auditions from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3, and Friday, Feb. 4, for its upcoming spring production of George Orwell's "1984." Orwell's play depicts the horrors of man's fate in a society where Big Brother is always watching. A cast of 14 is needed. Auditions will take place in the UVI Little Theatre, in the Classroom Administration Building. For details call Dennis E. Parker at 693-1341.
'Year of Languages' Celebration Continues with Film on Feb. 2
The Humanities Division's Modern Languages Area on UVI's St. Thomas campus continues its celebration of "2005: The Year of Languages" with a showing of the German film "Goodbye Lenin" at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2, in Chase Auditorium. The film is free and open to the UVI community. For more information, contact Prof. Violeta Donovan at 693-1349.
St. Croix Campus Writing Center Schedules Open House
The Writing Center on UVI's St. Croix campus will conduct an open house for the UVI community from Jan. 31 through Feb. 4. The center is located in Room 104 of the Modular Building, which overlooks the campus tennis and basketball courts. Open house hours will be daily, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call the center at at 692-3033.
January Issue of UVI: Dateline Now Available
The January 2005 issue of UVI: Dateline is now available on the UVI web site www.uvi.edu. The issue includes story and photo from motivational speaker Dr. Dennis Rahiim Watson's appearance on the St. Croix campus and a UVI: Dateline reader survey.
Symposium on Haiti Set Feb. 4 for UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix Campuses
UVI's Reichhold Center will sponsor a public symposium on Haiti, it's revolution and current circumstances on Friday, Feb. 4. The symposium is scheduled in conjunction with a Virgin Islands performance by the Haitian musical group Strings on Dec. 5. Participants in the free symposium will include UVI instructors Dr. Malik Sekou, Dr. Vincent Cooper, Gene Emanuel and Dr. Evelyn Lallemand. A special guest will be UVI alumnus Dr. Patrick Bellegarde-Smith, who is an associate professor in the Department of Africology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Dr. Bellegarde-Smith has spent time living in Haiti. This will be his first visit to the Virgin Islands in 30 years. The symposium will originate at 7 p.m. in Chase Auditorium on the St. Thomas campus. It will be videoconferenced to the St. Croix campus (room to be determined). 'Recruitment and Selection of Personnel' Seminar Offered by SBDC on Jan. 31
UVI's Small Business Development Center will conduct a seminar entitled "Recruitment and Selection of Personnel" from 10 a.m to noon on Monday, Jan. 31, at the UVI-Small Business Development Center Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The presenter is Karen L. Blyden, student recruitment officer at the University of the Virgin Islands. The seminar will cover the basics of recruiting and selecting the right people for individual businesses. Pre-registration is required. Admission is $20. A $5 discount will be given attendees who indicate how they learned about the seminar. For details or to pre-register, call 776-3206.
'Personnel Handbook' Seminar Offered by SBDC on Feb. 2
UVI's Small Business Development Center will conduct a seminar entitled "Personnel Handbook" from 10 a.m to noon on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at the UVI-Small Business Development Center Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The presenter will be Kevin A. Rodriquez, director of the Division of Personnel for the Government of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The seminar will provide basic information on personnel handbook standards for entrepreneurs and employers. Pre-registration is required. Admission is $20.
