Margot Bachman has been a "friend" since I moved to St. Thomas about the same year as did she and Bill. In 1969, when she was forced to take over the running of Antilles Real Estate due to his death, Margot gave me the opportunity to get a real estate license and work with her. The following week she hired Michael Mackay who, in 1971, became my husband. Needless to say, Margot has a special place in both our hearts.
When we left the islands in 1998 and moved to the Hamptons in New York, it was discovered she owned a house in the area; five years later we moved to North Stonington, CT, and Margot has a house in Stonington. Some angel sits on our shoulders allowing us to continue to see her regularly.
A few years back Margot and I spent a 30-day vacation in Brazil using UNESCO's historic sites as our destinations. Not once during that time did I regret sharing the holiday with her. Funny, generous, accommodating and game for anything, Margot made that trip a highlight of my travel history.
Right up to this month, she has been there for us. My aunt is celebrating a 90th birthday at our home and family members are coming for the weekend. When I asked whether we could rent her Stonington house for the weekend, she said, "It's my birthday present to Aunt Henny". Margot coined the word "friend". She is twice as wonderful as Molly Morris presented her.
