Aug. 6, 2005 – Governor Charles W. Turnbull has proclaimed the week of August 1-8, 2005 as "VIRGIN ISLANDS AGAINST DRUGS, CRIME AND VIOLENCE WEEK"; and called on the public to support the Virgin Islands Night Out Committee, in cooperation with the National Association of Town Watch, in holding the 18th Annual Virgin Islands Night Out Against Drugs, Crime and Violence.
In his proclamation, the chief executive said the use of illegal drugs has spread at an alarming rate and reached into every segment of our society, especially among our young people. The governor said we must be cognizant of the deleterious effects of crime and illegal drug use. All residents have the right to live in an atmosphere of safety, health, and protection from criminal elements," the proclamation said.
Governor Turnbull said all residents can demonstrate their commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle by supporting neighborhood activities during this week-long campaign. "There is a growing recognition that we can make a difference if we work together to eliminate drug abuse and say 'NO' to crime and drugs."
Governor Turnbull called on governmental departments and agencies, as well as businesses, schools, civic organizations and other public and private institutions to show their support by their participation in the various neighborhood functions. The governor said the Virgin Islands Government and communities are committed to ensuring the continued success of Virgin Islands Night Out Against Drugs, Crime and Violence.
