May 19, 2006 – The Virgin Islands Montessori School announced that it has been awarded accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools for grades PK – 9.
Dr. Patricia Kelly-Stiles, chair of the Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools, announced the award.
School administrator Shournagh McWeeney said, "We are elated to receive this news just before the end of the school year. It is a true testament to Dr. Maria Montessori's work, started almost 100 years ago, that her dynamic approach to learning does indeed produce highly educated and successful students."
Middles States accreditation signifies that V.I. Montessori School has engaged in developing self-knowledge, has hosted an evaluation team and has created an on-going strategic plan to continue improving the school.
Accreditation also demonstrates that the school has met Middle States standards that reflect current research and practices throughout the education profession.
Middle States accreditation is recognized as an indication of trustworthiness, educational quality and a commitment to ongoing school improvement.
V.I. Montessori School is a private nonprofit school that began in 1964 with 12 students. It now offers education to more than 240 students from toddlers to upper school students.
The school recently announced that it was adopting the international baccalaureate program for its upper school for the 2006-07 school year.
