Golfers to Team with Celebrities for Classic

June 2, 2006 – The Foundation for the University of the Virgin Islands invites the public to its second annual Celebrity Golf Classic from June 8 through June 11 at the Carambola Golf Club on St. Croix. During the golf classic local golfers will be teamed with visiting celebrities in support of the Foundation.
Among the celebrities who are slated to play golf are NBA Atlanta Hawks Tyronn Lue and Salim Stoudamire; BET and TBS Host Mia Butler, New York Giant Mitchell Smith and "Barker Beauty" Kathleen Brady Redd. Returning golfers include former Chicago Bear Willie Gault, retired Seattle Supersonic Gus Williams, M'fundo Morrison of "General Hospital" and Tanya Roberts of "That 70's Show."
In addition to the golf tournament, Youth Sports Clinics and Casino Night at the Divi Carina Bay Resort, the Golf Classic weekend will feature a luncheon to benefit the Foundation for the UVI at 1 p.m., on Friday, June 9, at the Buccaneer Hotel's Terrace Restaurant. The keynote speaker for the luncheon will be Mary Ann Gabino, development director at the Fundacion Comunitaria de Puerto Rico, whose topic will be the importance of charitable giving. The cost for the luncheon is $25. Tickets will be available at the door or by calling the UVI Institutional Advancement Office at 693-1040.
A highlight of the Golf Classic weekend is the Youth Sports Clinics, which have been rescheduled for 3 p.m., on Friday, June 9, on the grounds of UVI's St. Croix campus. In addition, a Youth Golf Clinic with LPGA Tour golfer Andia Winslow will take place at 3 p.m., on Friday, at the Carambola Golf Club .
Carambola boasts 18 holes of the most beautiful and challenging golf in the Caribbean. The course features rolling terrain, 94 bunkers and four of the best par-three's around. The most challenging hole is the signature hole number eight, a 223-yard, par-three, which requires an uphill tee shot to a well-bunkered green.
The registration fee for golfers interested in participating in the event on June 10 is $125 per person. On-site registration for golfers who want to participate in the tournament will be conducted at the golf club on June 10. For spectators, a $65 fee will allow tournament viewing, admission to the awards ceremony and a buffet lunch.
