Taxi Driver Dies of Gunshot Wounds

Aug. 6, 2006 — The St. Thomas taxi driver who was shot several times by two gunmen in the Anna's Retreat area Freday morning has died of his injuries. The death of the unnamed man marked the fifth killing in the territory in less than two weeks and the second on St. Thomas in three days.
Police spokeswoman Shawna Richards said Sunday the victim died at 9:55 pm Friday while being treated for several gunshot wounds. The victim was shot in the back, abdomen and thigh at about 11:50 a.m.
Just minutes before the shooting, authorities said the victim was waiting for a tow truck to remove his vehicle to a mechanic's shop after it broke down in the general vicinity of the Splash and Dash car wash.
A police source was quoted Friday on Radio One as saying that the incident was an attempted robbery and that two suspects were observed fleeing the area on foot moments after shots rang out.
Richards said police were awaiting notification of next of kin before releasing the victim's name.
Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to contact the Major Crime Unit at 715-5544 or emergency 911.
