Aug. 25, 2006 – Look for wind, rain and thunder Friday night as the outer bands of Tropical Storm Ernesto pass through the area.
Meteorologist Scott Stripling at the National Weather Service in San Juan said St. Croix should see more of the stormy weather, but St. Thomas, St. John and the British Virgin Islands will get some rain and wind.
"There's a band about 150 miles south of the Anegada passage, and it's moving northwestward," he said at 6 p.m, adding that winds could reach 50 mph over water.
Stripling said flash flood warnings may be posted later Friday.
According to Stripling, the stormy weather is forecast to continue into Saturday and Sunday. However, he said it should start to clear by late Sunday afternoon.
Tropical Depression 5 was upgraded to Tropical Storm Ernesto at the 5 p.m. Friday update.
At 5 p.m., Tropical Storm Ernesto was centered at 13.3 degrees north latitude and 67.6 degrees west longitude. This puts it about 300 miles south-southwest of San Juan, moving west-northwest at 16 mph.
Winds had reached 40 mph, with gusts to 50 mph. Tropical storm force winds extend out 90 miles. The barometric pressure stands at 1004 millibars or 29.64 inches.
