Nov. 9, 2006 – The St. Thomas-St. John Friends of Denmark announced that the society is joining with their colleagues on St. Croix in a student exchange program with their counterparts in Denmark, according to a press release from F.O.D. In early July, 2007, the society will host a student from Denmark who will participate in a cultural exchange program in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Then in mid-July a student from St. Thomas-St. John will travel to Denmark with a student from St. Croix to participate in a cultural educational program in that country. Our students will stay with host families from the Danish West Indian Society.
F.O.D. will be seeking a student to serve as a student ambassador. Basic qualifications are: the student be 18 to 23 years old by June, 2007, be a U.S. citizen and be a resident of the U.S.V.I. for at least 10 years. In order to qualify for consideration, applicants must complete an application form, which is available in the high schools, the university and from committee members.
The applicant must write an essay or do a project that focuses on the Danish influence in the V.I. The essay needs to demonstrate evidence of research and be a minimum of three pages. If the applicant selects to present a project, this effort must also show evidence of research and can be in mediums such as art, music, photography or technology.
Applications should be submitted to the St. Thomas-St. John Friends of Denmark no later than Jan. 8, 2007. Interviews and oral presentations will be scheduled. A final determination will be made by March 1, 2007.
