Dear Source:
As Counsel to the Legislature of the Virgin Islands for many years and as a student of Virgin Islands Government for many more, one observation on which everyone can agree is that it takes a majority of our Legislature to adopt new government programs, policies, and laws to forge a new direction for the people of this great Territory.
Each of the candidates for Governor of the Virgin Islands has in the course of this election put forth a platform for their administration that will require substantial legislation to be approved by a majority of members of the 27th Legislature.
To this end, I call to the attention of Source readers, that with our new 27th Legislature now elected, it appears that Gubernatorial candidate John P. deJongh, Jr. enjoys the support of almost every member of the 27th Legislature, irrespective of island, irrespective of party. On the other hand, Ken Mapp does not have one member of the 27th Legislature supporting his candidacy.
This speaks volumes! The choice is ours. Do we want to move forward as a people pursuing progress in our island communities or do we want legislative gridlock? I vote that we move forward. Together we can!
