Dec. 21, 2006 — Thursday night in the Bob Owens slow-pitch softball league at D.C. Canegata ballpark, Anchor Dive erupted for 11 runs in the fifth inning of a time-shortened game to beat 40 Caliber 11-3.
Batting first, 40 Caliber came up with two runs on an RBI single by Orlando Benitez and an RBI groundout by Luis Cintron. Anchor Dive failed to score in the bottom of the inning and the score would remain that way until the fifth.
After 40 Caliber failed to score in the top of the fifth, Anchor Dive had their 11-run eruption, which featured two grand slam homers, by Craig Swartz and Joe Phillips, a solo shot by Carmelo Torres, and two bases-loaded walks to lead 11-2 at the end of five innings.
40 Caliber came to bat in the top of the sixth knowing that it was their last chance to get back into the game since the game time had expired. They were only able to come up with one run, however, which was not nearly enough.
Allan Woods picked up the win on the mound for Anchor Dive, while Angel Soto, a spot starter for 40 Caliber, got the loss. Leading the way at the plate for Anchor Dive were, Phillips and Swartz, who were both 1-for-2 with a grand slam home run and four RBIs; and Carmelo Torres (1-for-1 with a home run and one RBI). For 40 Caliber, Benitez was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
Wyatt Heat 19, Killer Bees 1
In game two, Wyatt Heat crushed the Terminix Killer Bees 19-1 in a 10-run mercy rule, five inning contest. David Oetken pitched a one-hitter to pick up the win (an almost unheard-of feat in slow pitch softball), while Rod Graci got the loss. The Wyatt Heat offensive onslaught was led by David Gonzalez (3-for-3 with two home runs and six RBIs), Thomas Corcino (2-for-3 with a homerun and two RBIs) and Dwayne Harvey (2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs).
For the killer Bees, Phillip Dribeaux was 1-for-2 with a home run and one RBI. The Heat moves to 7-2 on the season while the Killer Bees, without much of a stinger, remain winless on the year at 0-9.
