19th Annual Woman’s Coalition of St. Croix Golf Tournament Deemed a Success

Monday July 16, 2007 — The 19th Annual Woman’s Coalition of St. Croix Golf Tournament is now history, and according to organizers it was one of the best.
According to Clema Lewis, co-director of the Woman’s Coalition of St. Croix, it was just great. “It was bigger and better than last year,” Lewis said. “Last year we tried a different format, using different courses and this year we went back to the old format which the players seem to prefer. We also had more holes sponsors this year than ever before and that was very good. All and all it was a very good tournament.”
Seventy-two excited golfers of various skill levels teed off Sunday morning at 9:00 am sharp from all 18 holes at the Carambola Golf and Country Club. The scrambled format used by the tournament allows for all teams to finish at approximately the same time.
The four-man teams in the best ball event began to trickle back in at about 1:00 pm, with every one being back in the club house by about 2:30 pm.
After a very nice lunch provided by the golf club’s restaurant, it was time for the awards ceremony, hosted by John Beagles. His first order of business was to thank the sponsors who helped to make the tournament a successful one.
Terminix and Turner St. Croix Maintenance were recognized for sponsoring the Continental Breakfast and Dessert. Also recognized were contributing sponsors, Pinnacle Services, Plaza Extra, Owen Johnson Electric and the Law Offices of Rhon and Cameron, LLC.
Special thanks went to the host venue, Carambola Golf and Country Club, Dave, Wendy and staff of Carambola Golf course, Nickki and restaurant staff, Karen Beagles, Sue Diverio, and John Farchette, and WCSC staff, volunteers and golf committee.
After all of the recognitions and special thanks, it was time to announce the winners.
As the scores had begun to pop up on the scoreboard, it was clear that it was coming down to a two team race between Team 4A and Team 11A. Team 4A was in with a gross score of 54, 20 below par and looking very good. Their handicap, the lowest in the tournament, at just a two gave them a net of 52.
Team 11A that consists of Colin and David Wright, Sally Rodriguez and Dave McCoy was one of the last teams out on the course, but rumors were already coming in that they were having a pretty good round with a handicap of 10. The rumors rang true as they posted a gross score of 71, which with their 10 handicap gave them a net of 61 to claim the top honors for the tournament.
Second place net winners were Team 2A, which consisted of Mae Pozas, Doug Menzies, Paul Sanders, and Vikki Saunders. Third place net winners went to Team 7A, which consisted of Luis Belardo, Diane Burns, Tim Smith and Debi Smith.
Team 4A, with Leroy and Ken Peets, Joe Zeppuhar and Jay Murphy did not go away empty handed, as they won first place for the lowest gross with their 54. Second place for gross winners went to Team 1A with Dave Heiser, Jennifer Hautman, Peter Firestone and Victoria Rosenberg with a score of 59, and third place for gross winners went to Team 12A which consisted of Gregory Manigault, Barbara Shattles, John Beagles and Raymond Berkely with a gross of 61.
Other awards were handed out for the putting contest, which was won by Peter Firestone and Jennifer Hautman; closest to the pin contest was won by David McCoy for the men and Sally Rodriguez for the women; and the longest drive challenge was won by Dave Wright for the men and Anne Williams for the women.
