April 19, 2008 — Most people looking into the eyes of a cute pup or watching a kitten's antics know they need our protection. Animal advocates want to make sure everyone shares in that knowledge.
To draw attention to the plight of animals in the Virgin Islands, the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center marked National Animal Control Appreciation Week, part of National Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month.
Stacia Boswell, acting director and staff veterinarian, said that last year, the Animal Welfare warden team responded to more than 30,000 calls for assistance. It is the only organization on island providing animal control services, rescuing stray, sick, injured, unwanted and homeless animals.
The warden team also enforces V.I. leash laws, dog licensing laws and responds to cases of animal cruelty.
"Animal cruelty isn't just about dog fighting," Boswell said. The team answers anonymous tips about dogs tied in the bush, not being fed and watered or suffering in the sun. The team has the lawful right to seize neglected animals.
"The law is animals must have their basic needs met," said Moises Carmona, director of animal care operations and part of the warden team.
The team works diligently to stop animal cruelty and raise awareness of the Virgin Islands animal cruelty laws. As part of this awareness campaign, the center will host a conference later this year on animal cruelty legislation, animal control practices and the animal overpopulation crisis in the V.I.
"We will find and target areas that need education and help the most and go to them," Carmona said.
“The warden team provides an essential health and welfare service that benefits not only animals but the St. Croix community,” Boswell said.
Founded in 1973, the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center promotes the humane treatment of all animals on St. Croix. They also offer a low-cost spay and neuter program.
