St. Thomas Relay for Life Participants Make Plans; Volunteers, Donations Needed
UVI's 2008 St. Thomas Relay for Life team members are fine tuning plans for the University's participation in the June 21-22 fundraiser for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. Organizer Inez Bartlette said four teams have been formed, with just a few slots remaining open in the fourth team. She added that contributions of fruit drinks and water, etc. in support of the teams are needed.
Also needed are volunteers to help with tent setup and decoration. "Pirates of the Cure-ibbean" is this year's UVI theme and the tent decorations will feature a Buccaneer/nautical theme. Individuals with nautical items they are willing to loan as decorations should contact Robert Chen at 693-1143. Anyone who can help with tent setup should contact Curtis Gilpin at 693-1104.
Each team member pledges to contribute or raise $100 toward the team goal of $1,500. While team members who walk the CAHS track in shifts throughout the night a variety of team activities – such as dance and sports competitions, a scavenger hunt and a karaoke contest will take place in the infield. Presidential Search Committee Announced to Virgin Islands Public
A new release announcing the selection of a UVI Presidential Search Committee including representatives from a number of stakeholder groups and members of the UVI Board of Trustees was presented to the Virgin Islands media on Tuesday, June 3. The information was previously made available to the UVI faculty and staff via a Special Announcement on Wednesday, May 21. IYOR Plans World Ocean Day Celebration at St. Croix's Dorsch Beach on June 8
The 2008 International Year of the Reef (IYOR) Committee on St. Croix invites the UVI community to come out for a free, World Ocean Day celebration at Dorsch Beach, in Frederiksted, from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday, June 8. Activities will include a free snorkel clinic (gear provided), a beach scavenger hunt and an art-from-trash contest. Free snacks and prizes will be provided. This activity is one in a series of monthly events marking the International Year of the Reef. For details, contact Emily Tyner at UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies at 692-4144.
World Wildlife Fund Manager to Speak on Global Climate Change on St. Croix
The UVI community is invited to a presentation on global climate change issues by Claire Carlton, manager of the World Wildlife Fund's International Climate Witness Program at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 9, on St. Croix. The session, hosted by UVI's Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service, will take place at the Great Hall in the North West Wing building on UVI's St. Croix campus. Carlton has more than 13 years of experience working in the environmental sector, specializing in biodiversity conservation and mitigation of climate change impacts. American Heritage Defense Corporation Representative to Present Seminar at UVI
Dr. James Fabunmi of the American Heritage Defense Corporation will visit UVI's St. Thomas campus on Monday, June 9, and the St. Croix campus on Tuesday, June 10, to discuss potential ideas for research collaboration.
Dr. Fabunmi will also present a seminar at noon on Monday, June 9, in the MacLean Marine Science Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The seminar is open to the public. Topics to be covered include possible research initiative on integrated, self-adaptive biomimetic robotics for naval applications and the American Heritage Defense Corporation's strategic goals and objectives for academic support and initiatives.

UVI Volleyball Clinic Dates Changed; Registration Set for June 11-12
Due to travel issues, the dates for the University of the Virgin Islands advanced volleyball clinic, featuring University of Tampa head volleyball coach Chris Catanach, have been changed to June 16 to 19. Registration is scheduled for 2 p.m. on June 11 and 12 in the lobby of the Sports and Fitness Center. The clinic, which will be held at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center, was originally scheduled for June 23 to 26.
Catanach, who led the UT Spartans volleyball team to the NCAA Division II championship in 2006, will also assist with the preparation of UVI volleyball teams for the upcoming season. A news release is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
Reichhold Center's Youth Moviemaking Registration Deadline Extended to June 16
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts' Youth Moviemaking Workshop (YMW) – a fun, creative and educational seven-week program – starts on Monday, June 23, and runs through Saturday, August 9. The Department of Human Services sponsors the Youth Moviemaking Workshop. The application deadline has been extended to Monday, June 16. Applications are available at Reichhold Center's website at http://www.reichholdcenter.com/dmi.html. They are also available via email from ffenton@uvi.edu or by calling 693-1550. UVI Students, Recent Grad Involved in 2008 Miss Virgin Islands Pageant
Two UVI students and one recent graduate will be in the spotlight when the 2008 Miss Virgin Islands Scholarship Pageant takes place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, at Antilles School's Prior-Jollek Hall. The event, an official state pageant of the Miss America organization, will feature UVI student Janeisha John, the reigning Miss Virgin Islands. In addition to crowning her successor, John will perform during the pageant. In the fall, John will enter her senior year on UVI's St. Croix campus, where she will apply the one-year scholarship that was among the prizes she won along with the 2007 Miss V.I. title.
UVI 2008 graduate Shamika Thomas and St. Thomas campus student Al'Lima de Lugo, are among this year's five contestants. Other contestants include Taiesa Lashley, Abigail Hyndman and Rachael McCoy. All five will participate in the interview competition on Friday, June 20.
More than $20,000 in local scholarships will be awarded to the contestants. One of the key criteria for enrollment in the pageant is that each contestant be committed to seeking higher education, according to Cynthia Jerry of the Miss Virgin Islands Scholarship Organization, Inc. Family Movie Night to Feature 'Finding Nemo' on June 27
The 2008 International Year of the Reef (IYOR) Committee on St. Croix invites the UVI community to a free family movie night from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, June 27, in the Great Hall in the North West Wing building on the University's St. Croix campus. The popular underwater cartoon "Finding Nemo" will be shown. There will be free popcorn. Drinks will be on sale. The IYOR committee will provide a brief update on upcoming community events. Free Summer Exercise Program Expands on St. Thomas Campus
Due to the popular response, the free, informal summer exercise program offered on UVI's St. Thomas campus for stud
ents, faculty and staff will add a cardio and abs class beginning Tuesday, June 10. Classes in aerobics (both high-impact and low-impact), Pilates and cardio kickboxing began this week. Classes take place in the UVI Recreation Center (next to the tennis courts). Here is the class schedule:
• Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays
– Aerobics: 5 to 6 p.m.
• Tuesdays & Thursdays
– Pilates: 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.
– Cardio and Abs: 5 to 6 p.m. (starts June 10)
– Kickboxing: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The summer program is organized by the Student Activities Office. It offers a preview to a formal Wellness Project that will be launched during the Fall Semester. For the summer, no registration is required. Individuals can show up to any classes they like. Those who own their own exercise mats should bring them.
