July 1, 2008 — The victim of a Saturday afternoon shooting died at 1:26 a.m. Tuesday at the Juan F. Luis Hospital, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound.
The victim, 27-year-old Juan Berrios of Estate Whim, was shot around 4:10 p.m. Saturday while driving in the Estate Mon Bijou area. As a result of the shooting, Berrios lost control of his car, a 1998 Chevy Cavalier, and hit a tree.
Berrios was transported by ambulance to the Juan F. Luis Hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound above his right knee.
Berrios was bleeding profusely at the scene Saturday and had to be resuscitated, Police spokeswoman Melody Rames said Tuesday night.
She could not say what Berrios died from: "I was not given an exact cause of death."
Police were advised of Berrios' death, and the case has been reclassified as a homicide. The investigation into this case continues.
Acting Police Chief Benta urged anyone with information on this shooting or any other case to call the Investigation Bureau or his office at 778-2211.
"The investigation proceeds at a more rapid pace when the community comes forward with information," Benta said in a statement released Tuesday night.
This homicide closes the gap between last year's number of homicide and this year's as of July 1. Last year there had been 19 homicides as of July 1. Berrios' death is number 19 for 2008.
