After-School Programs Will Provide Reading and Math Help for Select Students

Oct. 3, 2008 – The Department of Education will begin a free after-school program that is designed to provide assistance to students in the second through ninth grades in the areas of reading and math. Students who did not perform at the necessary achievement levels on the Virgin Islands Territorial Assessment of Learning (VITAL) or those who have a specific need, as identified by their principal, are eligible for participation in the program, according to a press release from Education.
Parents are reminded and encouraged to take advantage of this extended learning opportunity by completing and submitting the registration forms sent home with their children. The Learn It Inc. Program is a component of the department's plan to increase growth and proficiency in reading and mathematics for all students. The program will operate from 3-5 p.m., on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, at all public schools in the territory.
To ensure a complete and smooth opening of the program during the week of Oct. 13, the deadline to submit signed forms to your child's school is Monday, Oct. 6.
For more information, contact the Office of the Insular Superintendent in your respective district at 775-2250 on St. Thomas or 773-1095 on St. Croix.
