Alert: Boil Water, Toss Ice

Oct. 20, 2008 – Potable water customers should boil water and restaurants are cautioned to discard ice made in the last 24 hours and discontinue the use of ice machines. . The V.I. Water and Power authority said E.coli bacteria has been found in the water distribution system between Kingshill and Frederiksted. WAPA has increased chlorination and implemented corrective measures that should solve the problem within 24 horus, but said as a precautionary measure customers in these areas should boil drinking water for five (5) minutes or use bottled water.
"During and after times of disaster, water distribution systems may experience low pressures due to lack of pumping capabilities which may result in compromised water quality," the statement issued Monday afternoon said.
