Dear Source:
I'm no farmer, but we have been doing some container gardening and producing tomatoes and herbs. The extension service at UVI has wonderful ideas and techniques all of us, no matter how small a deck or piece of land we have, can use to produce some of the products we ordinarily buy. With the cost of food so high and the economy so bad, this would be a good time for a rebirth of agriculture in the islands. Last year, my husband came home with three tomatoes on stems from the grocery store. He saved the seeds, dried them, and planted them. We had a huge crop of tomatoes for months. We are doing it again now.
I look forward to continuing to read this series on agriculture and hope all of us can be encouraged to take advantage of the great sun and rain here to produce more of our own food. Farmers markets in the states produce some beautiful vegetables. Such markets here could help us save money and excess could be donated to homeless shelters.
