Environmental Group Asks for Volunteers to Help Plant Trees

The Environmental Association of St. Thomas- St. John has announced that the new Humane Care Campus is about to open to serve the community’s needs. EAST has worked together with the Humane Society to plant more trees at their site, showcasing native trees. EAST secured a grant through the Urban and Community Forestry Assistance program, which will enable the organization to plant approximately 300 trees at the surrounding areas that have been disturbed by the recent construction of this needed campus. The slopes and terrain leading to the pond area will be protected from runoff erosion with the trees and will provide natural cover and food for wildlife. It will also help reduce global warming.
The group is about to plant those trees but needs assistance and help to comply with the volunteer hours of their grant. Two days have been selected for this effort: at 8 a.m., on Saturday July 18 and Sunday July 19, at the campus located by Market Square East across the street from the Cost U Less traffic light intersection on the highway.
Volunteers are asked to bring a pick or shovel and gloves for the planting, as supplies are very limited. Water, a light breakfast and lunch will be provided by EAST.
Please leave a message with your name, how to contact you, how many will be attending and what day you would like to attend at 775-6048 or e-mail east.activities@gmail.com with this same information, no later than Wednesday, July 15.
