Fire, Injectables Open Governmental Softball League on Winning Note

The Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation (DSPR) kicked off its 2010 Governmental and Industrial modified pitch softball league Tuesday night at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park with two scheduled games. The Fire Department beat DSPR Rebels 10-5 in game one, and the Luis Hospital Injectables stuck it to Education, 10-2, in game two.

Fire 10, Rebels 5
The Fire Department got off to a hot start as their ace pitcher, Troy Brown, outdueled the Rebels hard-throwing righty, Sergie Bell, to pitch his team to the 10-5 victory. It was Fire with 10 runs on eight hits and two errors, while the Rebels finished with five runs on six hits and two errors. Top batters for the winners were Mario Christian (3 for 3, with a home run and five RBIs) and Jesus Saldana (3 for 2 with two RBIs). For the Rebels, Sheila Gumbs was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Helena James was 2 for 3.

Injectables 10, Education 2
In Tuesday’s night cap, the Injectables came out firing on all cylinders as they really stuck it to Education 10-2 behind spot starter Dennis Brow, who kept a powerful lineup off balance with a good mixture of pitches. The Injectables, on the other hand, roughed up Education starting pitcher, Gareth Knight. The winners finished with 10 runs on 10 hits and one error, while Education plated two runs on seven hits and committed two errors. Rashaun Foster led the Injectables at the plate going 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Jusel Morales was 3 for 4 with one RBI. For Education, James Bates was 2 for 3, and Kenny Jackson was 2 for 2.
