The Yankees and Dominicanos were Sunday’s winners in the Raphael Jackson AA Baseball League at the D.C. Canegata ballpark. The Yankees got a walk-off single from Khalid Gerard to beat the Hurricanes, 9-8, in game one, and the Dominicanos capitalized on some poor fielding by the Cobras to win, 16-3, in game two.
Yankees 9, Hurricanes 8
For the second game in a row the 40 Plus Hurricane were victims of walk-off singles. On Friday it was the Dominicanos’ Juan Santana, and on Sunday the Yankees’ Khalid Gerard delivered the knockout blow.
Gerard delivered a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth and final inning to cap a two-run rally that propelled his team to victory. The Hurricanes’ nine errors did not help.
It was the Yankees with nine runs on eight hits and nine errors, while the Hurricanes finished with eight runs on 11 hits and three errors.
The winning pitcher was Darren Stevens in relief of Yankees starter, Leroy Simmonds. Jr., while Cruz Soto got the loss for the Hurricanes.
Top batters for the winners were Steve Simmonds (2 for 4 with three RBIs), and Mackeel Rogers was (2 for 4). For the Hurricanes, Carmelo Torres was 2 for 4 with one RBI, Jose Morales (3 for 5 with one RBI) and Rashan Foster (2 for 4).
Dominicanos 16, Cobras 3
In game two on Sunday the Dominicanos roughed up the youthful Cobras, 16-3, in a blowout. Juan S. Santana went the distance on the mound for the Dominicanos in picking up the win while Otoniel Perrera got the loss.
The Dominicanos scored 16 runs on eight hits and five errors while the Cobras had three runs on four hits and three errors. Top batters for the Dominicanos were Juan S. Santana (3 for 3 with three RBIs), and Fernando Quezada (2 for 3 with four RBIs). For the Cobras, Raymond Sankitts was 2 for 3 and Conrad Prevost was 1 for 2 with one RBI.
