A man was shot and killed Friday in the Mount Welcome area of St. Croix, according to the V.I. Police Department.

The victim was identified as 49-year-old Kailash Banani, the VIPD said.

According to police, at about 6:23 p.m., the 911 call center received a report of a shooting in Mount Welcome in the vicinity of the Mahogany Welcome Apartments. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered an unresponsive male individual who appeared to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the body. The victim was later identified as Banani.

Medical attendants on the scene were unable to find any vital signs on the victim.

Banani was transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital morgue by the morgue attendants.

Police urged anyone with information about the crime or of anyone suspicious in the area to call the Criminal Investigations Bureau at 340 778 2211, the 911 call center, or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS.)
