Poem by Olivia Cruz Monell: ‘Unite To Fortify’

Is it hate, or is love

the driving force behind the rage?

Is it burning rivers coursing through our veins?

Blinding power seeking revenge

of things assumed we should defend

not giving thought to consequences.

If it’s hate, then ours is insecurity;

our misguided feeling of inability

when called upon to function with maturity.

Emotions are a high sign of cowardice

when we hide behind our “piece,”

then we ran and hid in fear of the police.

If it’s love, then ours is superiority;

our inflated ego of dominance,

the feeling of being king among all.

A godly power of allowing life or death.

The devaluation of everyone’s freedom

measured by self-love. Unfounded supremacy.

Where do we go from here?

We can talk on social media.

We can offer prayers and lamentations.

We can write about things gone wrong.

We can point with our ten fingers.

But is this what brings the solution to our fears?

Let’s unite and organize.

Let us think things out, plan and formalize.

Let’s be kind, stern, and open-minded.

To stem the tide, we have to build a human wall;

A strong wall with no weak links.

From the highest titled to the lowest-ranked, unite!
