Students at St. Croix Central High School will have another day of virtual learning on Thursday, two days after multiple brawls prompted Education Commissioner nominee Dionne Wells-Hedrington to call for an investigation into the violence.

The fights Tuesday came on the eve of a scheduled professional development day for teachers, so the school’s roughly 783 students had virtual instruction on Wednesday.

The move to virtual learning Thursday is so contractors can complete electrical upgrades throughout the campus, according to a press release the Education Department issued Wednesday evening.

Virtual instruction will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Teachers are asked to report to the Central High campus at the normal reporting time for a staff meeting, according to the release. Students should check email and Schoology for assignments, it said.

Central High students who attend classes at the Career and Technical Education Center are required to attend those classes in person. School bus service will not be provided.

“The critical upgrades to the school’s electrical system will decrease the likelihood of frequent service interruptions. Repairs began on Sept. 14 and are expected to be completed on Sept. 15,” the release stated.
