Congresswoman Plaskett, a member of the House Ways and Means, Budget and Agriculture Committees, released the following statement regarding the federal grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the Virgin Islands Department of Education:

“I am very pleased to announce that FEMA has awarded a grant for $47,531,797 to the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE). These funds have been allocated to repair the severe damages caused by Hurricane Maria to the main Curriculum Center campus on St. Thomas.

“The 2017 hurricanes ravaged all three islands and devastated our public education infrastructure, and our public education system has long suffered from inadequate resources for our children’s education, which serves as a roadblock to successful learning. This funding will be integral to not just rebuilding but reinventing our public school facilities.”
