Southland Gaming of the Virgin Islands has announced the launch of a subsidy program as part of its ongoing commitment to revitalizing the horse racing industry in the Virgin Islands. The initiative reflects the company’s concern for the challenges of its local horsemen and its dedication to supporting the horseracing community, it said.
Southland Gaming of the Virgin Islands will offer a subsidy of $1,000 for each prospective racehorse and $550 for each non-thoroughbred pony training at the Clinton E. Phipps Racetrack. This subsidy aims to assist with the costs of feed, bedding and other essentials.
SGVI provided an update on the current progress of the track at the St. Thomas Horse Racing Commission meeting on Jan. 25, which included the Sports, Parks and Recreation commissioner, and horsemen.
“We regard these strategic steps as essential for the success of the upcoming racing season. With this subsidy program, SGVI reaffirms its commitment to preserving and enhancing horse racing – a sport that not only entertains but also embodies the spirit and cultural heritage of the greater Virgin Islands,” said Shaine Gaspard, chief operating officer for Southland Gaming of the Virgin Islands.
