It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Rupert Donaldfield Alexis Barton, better known as “Pert” or “Barton.” Our loving family member died peacefully at the age of 92, surrounded by loved ones at his residence on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Island, on May 3.

Born in Liberta Village, Antigua, Rupert Barton lived an amazing life full of love and laughter. He will be remembered for his dedication to his family and sense of humor.

Rupert Barton was preceded in death by his parents: Samuel Barton Sr. and Ann Barton; brothers: Johnnie, Nathaniel, Ashton, Charles Sr., Novelle and Dennis Barton; and sister, Viola Michael.

He is survived by his loving wife, Iona Barton; children: Stedroy “Teddy” Barton, Joycelyn Barton-Adams and Sharon Mafarachisi; grandchildren: Joville and Jovier Adams, Nyasha and Anisa Mafarachisi; brother, Samuel Barton Jr.; sons-in-law: Neville Adams and Tendai Mafarachisi; and grandfather figure to Jasmine Tanner, family of Dennis Barton, the family of Johnnie Barton, the family of Ashton Barton, the family of Samuel Barton, Jr., family of Nathaniel Barton, the family of Charles Barton Sr., family of Novelle Barton and family of Viola Michael.

Other survivors include Meryl Roberts and family, Hyacinth McLaughlin and family, Verlinda Wyre and family, Helene Simon and family, Kenneth Andrews and family, Claudette Joseph and the David family, Ida Ladoo Scott and family, the Looby family, the DeFreitas family, Eleta Joseph, Merine Isaac and their families, Avril Green and family, Bernadette Lewis-Charles and family, Laurel Simon and family, and Gwenie Soanes and family; close family friends: the Adams family, Andres family, Joan Bailey and family, Mignon and the Jarvis family, Ulysses Weaver, Delly Stout, Baswil and Hilderene George and family,

Georgiana Richards and family, Bernadette Joseph, Judith Meyers, Eartha Gomes and family, Sheila Jean, Ordryll Carillio and the Peters family, Brontilla Osborne, Monique Richards, Estellita Petersen, Urma McKay, former WICO family, Kadmeal Fenton, Francis Lewis, Alfred and Gwenette Manuel and the prayer group, Wilbert and Carmen Lindasay, Rosalie Bedford, Rose and George Sebastian, Agnes Frederick, Cathedral Church of All Saints family, Lynette Squiabro, Delroy Gifft and family, Junie Francis, Stedman Anthony, Valarie Rock, Sandra Christopher and family, Cynthia Matthew and family; as well as other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral service on Saturday, June 1, at the Cathedral Church of All Saints in Garden Street, St. Thomas. Viewing and tributes will be held at 9 a.m. followed by the service at 10 a.m. A second service and interment will be held in Antigua.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Turnbull’s Funeral Home and Crematory Services.
