Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest for Unlawful Firearm Possession on St. Thomas

A St. Thomas man was arrested after police discovered an unlicensed firearm during a traffic stop early Wednesday, the Virgin Islands Police Department reported.

Antonio Camacho was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and failure to securely attach license plate, according to a VIPD police report.

According to the police report, the stop occurred around 1:05 a.m. March 18 on Julian Jackson Drive after officers observed a vehicle traveling slowly without a front license plate.

Officers said they initiated the stop to check on the vehicle and driver. When Camacho lowered the window, officers detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, the report stated.

Police said a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a firearm. Camacho did not have a license to carry the weapon and was taken into custody.

Bail was set at $60,000. Unable to post bail, Camacho was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advice of rights hearing, police said.
